Leadership

Leadership Appointment

Hold a leadership appointment or role of responsibility successfully for no less than six months in the Unit or one approved by the VSL beforehand.

The Venture Scout should discuss with the VSL and record his/her role, responsibilities, terms of duties, targets, achievements, etc. and later evaluate with the VSL.

Skills

Exploration test

Pre-requisite: Venture Scout Standard and valid First Aid or Life Saving license.

Basic requirements: two companions and Exploration Log.

May be conducted at Unit, District or Area level.

Note: Exploration logs may be called up at random by the National Venture Scout Council for audit of standards.

a)     Land exploration

Distance of no less than 60km on foot, over a minimum of two days one night.

Day exploration, night exploration and survey element.

b)     Cycling Exploration

Distance of no less than 100km on bicycles, over a minimum of two days one night.

Day exploration, night exploration and survey element.

c)      Sea Exploration

Distance of no less than 45 nautical miles on kayaks or sailing boats, over a minimum of two days one night.

Day exploration and survey element

Note: Examiners must attend a half day workshop oragnised by the National Venture Scout Council in order to be accredited.

Activity

Activity Instructor Course (AIC)

Pre-requisite: Venture Scout Standard and a basic level of proficiency in the chosen activity.

Basic requirements: Organise and conduct a basic course for similar activity to at least four Scouts or Venture Scouts, over a minimum period of six sessions as the On-the-Training (OJT)

a)     Successfully complete an AIC organised by the National Venture Scout Council

Example: FootDrill Instructor Course, Pioneering Instructor Course, Camp Craft Instructor Course, Orienteering Instructor Course, etc.

b)     Successfully complete an Instructor-level course organised by an approved organisation.

Example: Archery Instructor Course, Kayaking Instructor Level 1, Dragon Boat Instructor Course, etc.

c)      Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Instructor Course

All DIY instructor Courses must be approved by the National Venture Scout Council.  A proposal of course structure, syllabus, and schedule must be submitted for approval at least six weeks before its commencement. In case of specialised activities, a qualified Examiner must be submitted as part of the proposal.

Note: All AICs inclusive of OJT should range between 10 to 12 sessions. Each session is a period of at least three hours, of which no more than two sessions should be held in a day.

Responsibility

a)     Emergency and Rescue Duty

Attached to a recognised authority for First Aid, Life Saving or Civil Defence

Active duty of a minimum of 8 hours.

b)     Part of a team set up to render First Aid, Life Saving or Civil Defence duty with an outdoor event.

Active duty of a minimum of 8 hours.

Evidence of a proficiency in compilation of a shift report and treatment log.

Service

Community Project

Organise and conduct a community project whose key objective is to create a positive impact on the target group, which may be Cub Scout Pack, Voluntary Welfare Organisation or religious body.

Project should be over a minimum period of three months from planning to evaluation.

Area of involvement should encompass administration, logistics, programme, planning, conducting of activities and evaluation.

A Project Log should be maintained to record reflections and lessons learnt.

The ratio of Venture Scouts under assessment to the number of participants should not be greater than 1:20

a)     Day Event

Event should be over at least 8 hours.

Example: Community camp fire, Cub Scout Field Day, environmental awareness exhibition, etc.

b)     Overnight Camp

Camp should be over at least two days one night.

Example: Children’s Camp, Cub Scout Skill Camp, etc.

Must be a different camp from one chosen under ‘‘Instructional Leadership”.

Citizenship

Complete any additional one listed in VSS.

 

 

 

 

 

Personal Development

Preparing for a job interview

Select a recruitment advertisement from the newspaper that interests you and discuss with the VSL why would you apply for the job.

Prepare a Curriculum Vita and a letter applying for a job.

Carry out a mock job interview with your VSL.

Record a checklist of the preparations made for the interview.

Additional for Venture Scouts pursuing the PSA: (Optional)

Prepare a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and a letter introducing yourself, and why are you interested in pursuing the PSA.

Submit CV and letter together with the PSA Candidacy Application Form.

Self-Reliance

Venture Scout Cord Camp (VSSC)

Successfully Complete a VSSC approved by the National Venture Scout Council.
